Battle of the Crossover SUVs; How Does the Nissan Pathfinder Stack Up?
As the sales of large crossover SUVs continue to flourish, buyers are faced with a vast array of choices. However, with the release of the new Mazda CX9, many of the heavyweights are having to share the limelight. The Nissan Pathfinder has been a popular model in recent years, but in order to make an informed decision, you need to know how the Nissan Pathfinder stacks up against the other segment leaders. Here we compare the Nissan Pathfinder ST-L, Mazda CX9 Touring, Kia Sorento Platinum and Hyundai Santa Fe Highlander.
Pricing and Specification:
There is not much difference in price across the four models. The midrange CX9 is priced at $52,890, the Nissan is also mid range and is priced at $55,490. However, for comparison purposes, the Kia and Hyundai are top of the range, and both $55,990.
The Mazda CX9 has electrically adjustable front passenger and driver’s seats, sat nav, climate control, reverse camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and autonomous braking.
However, the Nissan Pathfinder adds a 360 degree above view camera, panoramic glass roof, electrically adjustable steering column and keyless entry. Neither the Kia or Hyundai offer the camera or steering column. Additionally, only the Nissan and Mazda offer separate temperature controls for the second row with a front override.
All the models have side and front airbags for passenger safety. However, the Hyundai and Kia side airbags fail to cover the third row passengers. All the models have achieved the five star maximum ANCAP safety rating.
It is here that the Hyundai is showing its age in terms of space and layout. There is only moderate knee room for the rear seats, which can leave the legs pressed against the hard plastic back on the front seats. However, the Mazda and Nissan are the biggest in the bunch, which means that they offer a decent amount of space for all passengers. The Nissan has big leather armchairs, which feel tremendously comfortable. There are also lots of storage solutions including centre console, a large glovebox, numerous bottle holders and a variety of smaller cubbies dotted around the cabin. There is plenty of leg and shoulder room even if the rear rows are occupied by adults
While an updated new Nissan Pathfinder is anticipated in the next year, the current Nissan Pathfinder does certainly stand up well against the competition. This comparison highlights that this model not only offers great value but is a practical choice for those looking for a spacious family SUV. So, while the Mazda may be the new kid on the block, the Nissan Pathfinder can certainly give it a run for its money.
