Diesel V6 Could Return to the Nissan NP300 Navara Line Up
As Nissan’s alliance with Mercedes-Benz, it has opened up the possibility that Nissan models may benefit from a shared V6 diesel engine. Mercedes-Benz is launching their X-Class to the Australian market next year, and this highly anticipated model will share a platform with the Navara. Since the X-Class will borrow architecture and the twin turbo, four cylinder 2.3 litre engine from the Navara, it is possible that the V6 3.0 litre engine in the flagship X-Class could be offered with the Navara.
The Possibilities for a Diesel Nissan NP300 Navara:
According to Jose Muñoz, chief performance officer at Nissan, there could be an opportunity that the 190 kW V6 engine could benefit the Japanese brand. Muñoz stated that he honestly does not know the plans beyond the current announcements for the alliance. However, it has been speculated that the terms of the alliance agreement mean that Nissan could offer a V6 diesel Navara on the Australian market. Nissan previously offered a D40 Navara with a 3.0 litre Renault-sourced oil burner, which produced 170 kW of power.
This move would have both the Navara and X-Class offering a direct rival to the only diesel powered V6 mid sized ute on the Australian market. Currently, the only option is the Volkswagen Amarok, which features a 3.0 litre V6 providing 180 kW of power.
The Benefits of the Mercedes-Benz Partnership:
The partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Nissan also provides a number of other strategic benefits for Nissan in exchange for providing the basic underpinnings for the X-Class. According to Mr. Muñoz, the partnership has been evaluated from either side to ensure that both parties benefit. For Mercedes-Benz, the partnership has allowed the brand to add a pick up to their lineup, while Nissan has gained access to the ideas behind quality, product engineering, production and positioning from the Germans. He concluded that every product provides opportunities on either side, as the agreement is not based on one element. This partnership aims to provide strong cooperation and a different perspective on each project.
While Nissan has yet to confirm any details, this looks as if there is a strong possibility that the Navara range could benefit from the diesel V6 powertrain. This would provide a fantastic boost to the Nissan line up and allow Nissan to more aggressively compete within the segment.
