What is the Nissan Juke Signal Shield Concept?
We have all seen recent developments in technology that can give us almost unlimited access to information. As useful as this can be, we have all experienced information overload or distractions that could be dangerous when driving. Nissan has decided to take a closer look at this problem, and they have developed the Signal Shield concept car.
The Need for a Solution to Driver Distractions:
The Signal Shield concept car is a direct response the increasing numbers of drivers on our roads that are distracted by their phones whilst driving. A recent report by the RAC in the UK found that 31% of drivers questioned admitted to using their phones when driving. Additional research carried out by Nissan discovered that one in five drivers regularly text when they are driving. When the driver’s attention is elsewhere the chances of a collision occurring rise significantly, and the legal ramifications can be severe. The Signal Shield concept is designed to give drivers a way to eliminate potential distractions caused by texts, app notifications and social media alerts on their smartphones.
Old Technology Adapted for the Modern Age:
The Nissan Signal Shield concept is essentially a Nissan Juke with an interesting addition. Built into the Juke’s armrest is a 19th century invention known as a Faraday Cage. This is a device that is capable of blocking all electromagnetic signals, such as cellular, Bluetooth, and WiFi signals. The shielded compartment is used to store the driver’s smartphone and rendering it unable to be used when driving. This is achieved by blocking incoming signals and distributing them across the conduction material of the cage so that they cannot reach the stored device.
Why Not Just Turn Off the Smartphone?
Well, this may seem to be a simpler solution to the problem, but it is likely to fail for a couple of reasons. Firstly, drivers could already be doing this, but the research shows that they don’t. Smartphone used is addictive, and it is easy to forget to turn the phone off. Secondly, turning off the smartphone actually inhibits the ability to use some useful features. Nissan understands this, drivers using Signal Shield can still connect their phones to the vehicle entertainment system using AUX or USB ports. This means that the driver can still listen to their stored media and wireless connection will still be blocked.
