Comparing The Nissan Qashqai ST vs. The Hyundai Kona Active
The new Nissan Qashqai for sale here in Australia is part of a growing trend in smaller crossover vehicles. These are becoming popular because they have more practicality and some extra height when compared to a more traditional hatchback. In this article, we will look at two rival small SUV cars, the Nissan Qashqai ST and the Hyundai Kona Active. They both appeal to the same market, but they both have a quite different approach to each other. Hopefully, this information will allow you to make a more informed choice between the two cars.
The Design Ethos
The look of any car is highly subjective, but it’s worth mentioning how these cars compare. The latest Qashqai ST has a new frontal design that is very reminiscent of its larger stablemate the Nissan X-Trail. The style in fresh and contemporary and it’s likely to age very well in the coming years. The Kona Active is based on the Toyota C-HR and older Nissan Juke styling; its very youth focused with lots of body cladding and bright colours. This style is fine for attracting younger drivers, but it lacks a certain class and isn’t likely to age well.
The Equipment Levels
Both cars have a variety of common equipment, such as cruise control, daytime running lights, lane assist, cloth seats, Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), a forward collision warning system, six airbags, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. Further enhanced equipment levels are available if the Kona Highlander and Qashqai N-Tec specifications are purchased.
There are some areas where the equipment levels differ, the Nissan Qashqai ST has exclusive features, such as a 5” infotainment touchscreen, front sensors, a push button start and 17” alloy wheels. The Kona Active has other features, including a 7” infotainment screen, 16” alloy wheels, blind spot monitoring and a cross traffic alert. Although the Kona Active is cheaper than the Nissan Qashqai, it should be noted that the added safety features are only available for an additional $1500 premium.
Some Final Thoughts
The Kona Active is cheaper, more youth orientated and with the $1500 premium, it has some more equipment. However, the Qashqai simply feels like a more refined, practical and genuinely useful vehicle. The Qashqai would benefit from a slight update to the infotainment system, but overall it’s the better car for the money.
