The Nissan Navara 2019 models are all fitted with excellent braking systems to keep you safe on the road. Sadly, many drivers take their brakes and other critical systems for granted, and they become neglected. This may only become apparent during an emergency when the braking system is needed, and then it may fail. For this reason, it’s essential to get your Nissan Navara serviced regularly so that your brakes can be properly inspected by a trained technician. One of the first signs that you may notice is a grinding noise, let’s explore what that sound may mean.

Car Brake Pad Replacement

When the car brake pads begin to fail it’s essential to get them replaced. If the car’s braking performance is compromised, it will affect the stopping distances, and this could lead to a traffic accident. If the brake pads are replaced early, this will be a relatively cheap repair, but if the problem is ignored, it could result in a more expensive repair bill.

The Source of the Grinding Noise

The brake shoes or pads are covered with a softer friction material that is designed to wear away at an even and consistent rate. This material covers a steel backing plate material that gives the part it’s necessary rigidity. Once the friction material has worn away the metal backing plates will come into direct contact with the brake disc rotors and/or drums.

This is when you start to hear a metallic grinding noise at lower speeds and a higher pitched squealing noise at faster speeds. The metal on metal friction will heat up the brake disc rotor and drums and the steel backing plates. The backing plate will create gouge marks in the surface of the brake drums and rotors that cannot be repaired. Eventually, these parts will become heavily damaged, and they will cost far more to replace than a simple set of brake pads.

Under normal driving circumstances, a brake drum or rotor should have a useful lifespan double that of a brake pad. So, if the brake pad replacement is avoided to save money, the cost of replacing the brake drums and rotors prematurely will more than offset this perceived saving. Also, it’s important to note that the braking efficiency will fade as the problem gets progressively worse.

What Should You Do?

If you hear a grinding or squealing noises from your brakes, it’s time to get the Navara booked in for an urgent inspection. If you also experience a shuddering feeling the brake disc could be warped as well. Finally, it’s worth mentioning that certain brake pads have a higher metallic content, these are typically used on high performance cars that need extra braking performance. These are known as “competition pads,” and they can be noisy, so if you have a performance car, this could be the cause. If you’re unsure about how your brakes sound or perform get in touch with your local Nissan service advisor for expert advice.

If they are looking for a Nissan Navara, Perth based drivers should get in touch with Perth City Nissan, and we would be happy to arrange a no obligation test drive.
